Improvements

Outboard motor props have evolved and today they come in a range of materials, designs, diameters and pitches. They are now high performance low weight props. The motor and props are controlled by a push button which in turn controls the running of the boat. The horsepower sent to the propeller through the shaft is converted into thrust by the rotation of the propeller and this thrust propels the boat. The propeller can be placed at an angle to maneuver the boat in shallow water in modern boats.

Popularity

The outboard motor propeller is not outdated thought it was the first propulsion method used in mechanized watercraft. Leisure boats and boats used for sport still use outboard boat propellers. Two, three and four blade props are available and the cupping design helps to protect the prop from breaking in the event of hitting a rock or other obstacle. Aluminum and stainless steel are the common material used to make props and the metal is coated with corrosion resistant paint. Outboard motors and propellers are portable and it is easy to carry spares for emergency replacements.
